Learning: Hazard Management’s “Get Out of Jail Free” Card.
Learn our way out of the prison of blame.
‘We can either blame or learn, we can’t do both.’
Sydney Decker
To error is human to be accountable is divine. The great opportunity for any era of human being has always been to become better versions of ourselves. The best rendering of our self is the one that chooses to learn from mistakes rather than ignore the issue or blame others. On first glance, the learning path may seem like a lot of work. This notion likely motivates individuals to forfeit learning in many instances. But elevating our awareness is how we free ourselves from our mistakes once and for all. Integrating knowledge into actionable behaviour truly is the ‘get out of jail free’ card, but it is more than that. Learning from our mistakes improves every aspect of our society. This is the true Hero, the person that lives their learning to the best of their ability which is ultimately in service to others.
To free ourselves with accountability is a heroic action that serves the community.
To blame another person requires a lack of courage and integrity to be answerable for ones’ own actions and to project accountability onto another. This individual or organization is a victim of their own fear of accountability. This happens all of the time. Front line workers are blamed for all manner of things that are a feature of the larger system and social forces at play. In 2019 Boeing blamed the pilots of two 737 max 8 aircract that crashed. Boeing knew there were problems with the new softwear (MCAS) system on the aircraft. A system they failed to alert pilots about or train them to be competent with. Blame seemed like the simple way out of a much more complex problem. . .the culture at Boeing.
There is a chronic weight to blame that requires a great deal of energy and attention to maintain. As long as the deception is in place, the weight of the event exists. This is a heavy chronic condition that can lead to many mutations of the original human hazard. Therefore, blame is definitely not the easy way out for anyone. Blame is a prison because the truth shines through every time we see our self in the mirror.
The chronic weight of blame.
Learning from our mistakes is a courageous responsibility, that sets us free. Get out of jail!
Freeing ourselves starts with our minds.
The services, and products humans create in any High Potential Consequence industry are only as good as the quality of the thoughts and actions of the humans delivering the service or building the product. Archetypal’s programs teach individuals within these industries to become conscious of the specific hazardous human behaviours and mindsets that undermine our best efforts and how to elevate them by guiding ourselves to the exact potentials that allow us and our clients to remain free from harm.
