Values Based Approaches To Managing Adversity

Aspirational human values, when organized intentionally, offer profound utility in helping people manage adversity. At the core of our being we have the opportunity to exercise a choice about how we respond to the situations we are exposed to, or are engaged with. These response choices naturally present as pairs of opposites; Shadow or Luminant Power.

Shadow Power (Ego or our Dragons) response choices are limiting and reflect a lack of will to internalize what is happening, allow a negative emotion to express distructively, or allow personal disempowerment. Luminant Power (nature) response choices are expansive and arise from acceptance of the current reality, transcend a negative emotion, and empower oneself from within. Luminant responses serve the whole community connected to, or collectively engaged with an endeavour. This course explores eight Shadow and Luminant Power pairs and their subsets. The eight pairs are articulated in the Adversity Management Model below.

Educational Outcomes

1.Understand that micro decisions lead to either greater or fewer options.

2. Have strategies for specific challenging situations.

3. Bring a deeper value from the adverse situations you are in.

4. Gain communication skills with yourself, others and the environment.

5. Harvest richness from lived events, transforming them into experience.

6. Understand more deeply who you really are.

7. Access a deeper courage than you thought possible.

8.    Gain ownership of both your Shadow and Luminant power and the process of elevating one’s response choices.

That which we fail to bring into consciousness will show up in our lives and we will call it fate.” - Carl Jung

Good or bad outcomes are rarely based on one individual response. They are typically a series of responses that either expand or reduce our options. Becoming aware of a typical series of responses that narrow our options and increase our exposure to negative consequences has incredible utility.

Awareness Card Examples

Awareness cards depict a deep dive into an awareness and the fact that there are two energies of which to be conscious. All thirty six awarenesses you will learn about in this workshop have a shadow side. The shadow is not our best selves and often leads to less evolved responses. Acknowledgement of these elements is critical in adversity management. Consciousness of the whole self leads to higher level choices, maturation, and clarity. Awareness of this process is a positive game changer for leadership in highly adverse situations.
